WASSCE: LASG distributes science materials to schools for practicals

Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, Lagos State Commissioner for Education

The Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Education, has distributed various science practical materials and chemicals across the 322 Public Senior Secondary Schools in the state, for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, the Commissioner for Education, disclosed this in a statement, signed by Mr Ganiu Lawal, Assistant Director, Public Affairs in the ministry, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Adefisayo said that the gesture is part of the state’s investment and continuous process to the progress of academic activities, particularly for the students.

“The distribution of science materials is in consonance with efforts to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education in schools,” she said.

The commissioner also said that the state government had approved payment of N700 million as registration and WASSCE fee for 51,187 students sitting for the examination.

“Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, has been doing a lot as the administration has ensured prompt payment of WAEC fees of students.

“This is in tandem with the free education policy of the state government as sustained by the Sanwo-Olu Administration.

“The state has also provided several science practical materials for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Agricultural Science for over 46,236 students sitting for this year’s examination,” Adefisayo said.

She said that various chemicals, substances and consumables used for practicals cost the state government over N80 million.

“The state government provided funds to schools for other perishables aside from the chemicals which will be procured a day before the examination.

“STEAM education is very important and as a government, we have constantly made provision of standard science laboratories in our schools, we have not only renovated laboratories in some schools but have built additional in other schools,” she added.

Adefisayo, however, advised the students to do their best in the examination

According to her, it is a very critical phase that determines the career path they intend to pursue and the government has reduced the burdens on their parents.
