CDS clarifies OPSH, 3 Armoured Division merger

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has signed into law the Security Challenges (Containment) Order No 3, 2021, in the exercise of powers conferred upon him by Section 176 (2) of the 1999 Constitution.

The law becomes necessary due to the prevailing insecurity in the state, occasioned by banditry, which led to loss of life and property, undermining free movement of people, goods and services in the affected areas.

The order, which takes effect on September 1, 2021, directs the immediate total closure of Isa-Marnona Road to all motorists. Travellers plying that road are advised to go through Goronyo–Sabon Birni axis. Lorries/trucks or other vehicles carrying wood from the forests are also prohibited.

MEANWHILE, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor, has clarified that the merging of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) and the 3rd Armoured Division was to give the commander wider latitude and resources to deploy in emergencies.

Following the outbreak of crises in Bassa and Jos North local councils of Plateau State, some stakeholders questioned the rationale behind the Commandant of 3rd Amoured Division doubling as the Commander of OPSH.

They said the merger was causing distraction; hence the recent crises were not giving adequate attention.

Irabor, who was on a courtesy visit to Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau, yesterday, said the merger was a great advantage, which must not be misconstrued.

The CDS, who was also in the state to assess the security situation and interact with key stakeholders on how to ensure lasting peace, said his visit was part of the mandate from President Muhammadu Buhari for the Armed Forces to do everything within their schedule to ensure that perpetrators were fished out and attacks silenced.
